Sindh government to set up its own grid company for wind energy projects

KARACHI: The Sindh government has proclaimed to set up its own grid company under public-private partnership approach, which will mainly contribute to relinquish clean electricity being produced in the country’s only wind corridor in Thatta-Jhimpir region of the province.

The announcement was made by Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh while addressing as the chief guest at the inauguration of 17th World Wind Energy Conference-2018 on Wednesday. This three-day conference was organized by World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) on the subject “Re-energizing the developing world”.

The provincial minister stated on the instance that the projected grid company would serve up as the keystone of the Sindh government’s energy policy being followed to bind the enormous capability the province had to generate clean electricity on foundation of its unexploited renewable resources of power generation.

He also added that, Sindh government would institute its own grid company in accordance of the similar policy fortitude, which was previously consumed to set up its own transmission and dispatch company for generating electricity from 100 MWs Nooriabad power plant-provincial government first own power plant under PPP mode-to Karachi.

Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh stated that Sindh government had reticent 60,000 acres land in the province to extend renewable energy projects in order to prove its exceptional pledge to produce electricity using the alternative resources.

He informed that almost 23 wind energy projects had started execution in Gharo-Jhimpir corridor of the province while another 30 to 40 such projects are at various phases of conclusion.

Furthermore, he stated that Sindh government would shortly launch a $ 100 million solar power project in the province with the support of World Bank, since it will advantage the inhabitants of off-grid regions in rural areas.
