Temporary shelter for homeless being provided in Lahore: PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said tents were being set up in Lahore as temporary shelters for the homeless sleeping on the footpaths.

The prime minister said this in a tweet on Saturday.

In an earlier tweet, Imran said he had asked Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to set up tents for people sleeping on footpaths and provide them food until Panah Gahs (shelters) were built.  He said the move was necessitated by the cold weather.

It may be recalled that the PM earlier this month had performed ground breaking in Lahore for the establishment of Panah Gah  for the down-and-out segments of society who spend nights on the streets under the open sky.

He said that spots were also being identified in Peshawar and Karachi for the shelters project.

The project is aimed at housing a number of homeless people who usually spend nights on footpaths or other places in different areas of Lahore city.

The PM had said that his party’s aim was to turn Pakistan into a welfare state and the target could not be achieved without helping the poor segments of the society.

“Should we allow our people to live on footpaths? Our government is bringing a first of its kind poverty alleviation package in which all relevant departments will work under a single setup to eliminate poverty,” said Imran Khan.

The PM maintained that on his recent visit to China, he expressed his desire to learn from the neighbouring country about their poverty alleviation measures and will implement a similar plan in Pakistan.
