NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, at a joint press conference alongside Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today, said the United States was concerned about stability of the Pakistan government, foreign wire service Reuters reported.

Mr. Tillerson arrived from Pakistan and first met Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Ahead of Mr. Tillerson’s three-day visit, the External Affairs Ministry had said that there will be detailed discussions on further strengthening India-U.S. partnership.

Flanked alongside Ms Swaraj, Tillerson remarked as quoted by The Hindu: “”Terrorist safe havens will not be tolerated. ‘Too many terror groups find safe haven in Pakistan which is now threatening stability of the Pakistan government,”

“India and USA are natural allies. Stand shoulder to shoulder against terror, the US official added.

”India and the U.S. continue to benefit from strong economic bonds. India is crucial to USA-Afghanistan strategy, back India as a leader in the region.

Sushma Swaraj, in her statement, said India and the U.S. discussed that no country in the world should provide safe heavens to terror groups.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday reconfirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the “war on terror” during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying his country had “produced results” fighting the region’s militants.

”We are committed in the war against terror,“,” Abbasi told Tillerson, as the two men sat facing each other on a long table.

“We have produced results. And we are looking forward to moving ahead with the U.S. and building a tremendous relationship,” added Abbasi.

During a short part of the meeting available to media, Tillerson told the Pakistani delegation that the nuclear-armed nation was an important U.S. ally in the region.

“(Pakistan is) important regionally to our joint goals of providing peace and security to the region and providing opportunity for greater economic relationship as well,” Tillerson said.
