EU military chief discusses security issues with COAS, Defence Minister

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday received Chairman European Union Military Committee General Mikhail Kostarakos at the General Headquarters.

According to the Inter Services Public Relations, both discussed regional security issues and matters of mutual interest during the meeting. The visiting dignitary appreciated the resolve of Pakistan Army and its continuing efforts towards fighting terrorism and bringing peace in the region.

The European Union Military Committee (EUMC) is the body of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy composed of member states’ Chiefs of Defence. General Mikhail Kostarakos has served as EUMC Chairman since November 2014.

Later, General Kostarakos called on Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan. The federal minister mentioned that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with EU, and draws strength from a shared objective of global peace and security.

During the meeting, the defence minister emphasised that Pakistan strongly condemns terrorism in all forms and manifestations and reiterated zero tolerance against use of Pakistan’s soil to promote terrorism against any country.

He further mentioned that Pakistan has been providing support to the international community in war against terrorism. He commended EU’s efforts in uplift and development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa particularly Malakand Division.

General Kostarakos expressed desire to enhance cooperation between Pakistan and EU. He highlighted the importance of better communication and interaction at various levels under a mutually agreed framework.

“Pakistan is committed to stability and peace in the region with particular focus on its relation with Afghanistan. A peaceful Afghanistan is not only in the interest of Pakistan but the whole region” said the Minister.

GeneralKostarakos also shared his views on Afghanistan. The federal minister highlighted that Pakistan, at this critical juncture in war against terror, wants more trade than aid to address root causes of extremism like unemployment and poverty.

He also expressed Pakistan’s desire to enhance collaboration in the field of defence and defence production especially the ease of access to defence technology of EU member countries.
