ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, on Monday said that Jahangir Tareen had played a ‘major role’ which led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to form the government in the centre, ARY News reported on Monday

The information minister, while responding to a tweet by Jahangir Tareen, acknowledged ‘Tareen’s efforts’ for strengthening the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, which resulted into formation of its government after being emerged as victorious in 2018 general polls.

He said, “If PTI is able to form government today, it is [result of] major role played by Jehangir Tareen.”

In his Twitter message, Chaudhry said that Tareen participated in the cabinet meetings on the desire of Prime Minister Imran Khan and [the party] leaders should respect the wish of the premier.

“The verdict against Jehangir Tareen was unfortunate,” he said adding that Tareen had only been kept away from elections but not from workers’ hearts.

Earlier in the day, Tareen tweeted a response to Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, saying, “There’s only one man in my life whom I consider my leader & to whom I’m answerable. His name is Imran Khan. I’ve stood by his side through thick and thin and will continue to do so till my last breath, IA. What others may say for their own strange reasons does not concern me .”

A bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had declared PTI’s key party leader Jahangir Tareen disqualified for being dishonest on the petitions filed by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi on December 15 – 2017.

Following the verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had de-notified Tareen as a member of the National Assembly from NA-154 Lodhran.
