Flooding wreaks havoc in seven villages of Pakpattan

LAHORE/PAKPATTAN: A boat operation to rescue flood-hit people continued for second day in Pakpatan as floodwater wreaked havoc in seven villages of the district.

Around 3,500 people and 250 animals evacuated to safety during the relief operation in Pakpattan.

Flooding destroyed rice and maize crops standing at hundreds of acres in the area.

Moreover, Punjab’s Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has rushed to Alipur after an upsurge in the water level of Indus River at Punjnad Headworks in South Punjab’s Muzaffargarh district.

The water inflow and outflow in Indus River have increased to 6,68,195 cusecs at Punjnad Barrage.

A flood stream after devastating the central Punjab region currently passing through the south Punjab to enter in Sindh.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has said that the intensity of the monsoon season has reduced and no further major increase in Punjab rivers’ flows is expected.

According to the Director General of PDMA, the spell of monsoon rains in the upper catchment areas has also ended, while the tenth spell of monsoon rains in Punjab has now concluded.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Wednesday said that no heavy rainfall is expected in Punjab during the coming week. However, high to very high flood levels persist in several rivers.

Moreover, India yesterday released more water into the Sutlej River amid concerns of another wave of flooding in the river.

A high flood alert was issued downstream of Harike and Ferozepur barrages in India.

The Indian High Commission officially informed Islamabad about the high flood alert. The Ministry of Water Resources informed all provincial chief secretaries and concerned departments about the water situation.

Currently, the water inflow and outflow at Trimmu Barrage have been 1,78,932 cusecs.
