Footballing legends from England

England have won the FIFA World Cup once beating West Germany in the final in 1966 at home and were the semi-finalists in the 1990 tournament.

Although their international performance has been on a topsy-turvy ride, England has undoubtedly produced one of the best players to play the game.

Bobby Moore:

Bobby Moore was the captain of the English side in the 1966 World Cup played at their home soil. He was known as one of the best defenders in the history of the game.

He appeared in 108 games till he retired from the game in 1973, which was a world record. That feat was broken by David Beckham who played his 109th game for England in 2009.

Brazilian legend Pele has said that Moore was the greatest defender he played against.

David Beckham:

David Beckham made his debut for the English side in 1996 and served as captain for six years where he played 58 matches while serving as the leader for his team.

Beckham appeared in three World Cups and two UEFA Euros.

He was the runner up for FIFA World Player of the Year twice and was included in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players in 2004.

Wayne Rooney:

Wayne Rooney became the youngest player to represent England at the age of 17 till his record was broken by compatriot Theo Walcott. He scored four goals in Euro 2004 to become the youngest goalscorer in the Euros.

Rooney played the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and was named England player of year in 2008 and 2009.

He is also the most red-carded player for England as he has been sent off twice in international fixtures.

Steven Gerrard:

Labelled as the heart and soul of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard started playing for England in 2000. He has played for his country in 2000 and 2004 Euro.

He also represented England in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and became captain for the team in 2010 South Africa World Cup.

He became the sixth player for England to represent his country in 100 games and is currently placed at No.3 in the all time appearance list.

He is regarded as one of the best midfielders in English history.
