Geeta identifies parents -- may fly to India this month

Geeta has been stuck in Pakistan for nearly 15 years, has identified her family.

She identified her father, step-mother and siblings in Bihar from a photograph sent to her by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

Geeta is likely to be flown back to India as soon as her documents are sorted out.

Faisal Edhi told that Geeta identified her parents through a photograph yesterday and a date (October 26) has been given for her return.

The woman apparently entered the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on a train from India almost 15 years ago. She was found by police and sent to shelter home.

Aged in her early 20s, lives in a women’s shelter in Karachi run by the Edhi Foundation, Pakistan’s largest welfare organisation. News of her plight surfaced in 2012 but no progress was made in tracing her roots.

But India’s High Commissioner (ambassador) to Pakistan T.C.A. Raghavan visited Geeta on August 4 to collect preliminary information which could help track down her home and parents.

And afterwards Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj vowed to bring the story to a movie-style happy ending, tweeting: “We will bring Geeta back to India.”

Although she cannot speak, Geeta can write the words “Telangana”, the name of a state in southern India, and “Peddavura”, the name of a village, in Hindi along with the number 193. Edhi officials speculate this may have been the number of her house.
