Good American Family is returning for Season 2, focusing on one of the most talked-about criminal cases of the 1990s.
Deadline reports that Hulu has greenlit the second installment of Katie Robbins’ anthology series, which will center around Lorena and John Bobbitt. The case of the Virginia couple became a global media sensation in 1993, sparking a heated public debate about domestic abuse, sexual assault, and the media’s transformation of trauma into entertainment.
The incident made international headlines when Lorena Bobbitt used a kitchen knife to sever the penis of her then-husband, John, while he was sleeping. She drove away, threw the organ out of her car window, and called the police to reveal its location. Emergency responders located the severed appendage, and surgeons successfully reattached it.
During subsequent legal proceedings, Lorena alleged years of physical and sexual abuse, claiming John had raped her on the night of the incident—charges that John denied. In 1994, Lorena was found not guilty of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity. In a separate trial, John was acquitted of marital sexual assault.
According to the season’s logline, the upcoming installment will examine the couple, the circumstances surrounding the case, and the resulting media circus that fueled a broader cultural debate on gender.
Ellen Pompeo, who starred in and executive produced the first season, will return as an executive producer, though she is not expected to appear on screen. Robbins also returns as creator and writer.
The first season of Good American Family examined the contentious case of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with a rare form of dwarfism whose adoption by an American family led to conflicting claims regarding her age and treatment. Co-starring Pompeo alongside Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid, the eight-episode debut drawn 6.3 million views globally across Hulu and Disney+ within its first six days.
The cast and release date for the Lorena Bobbitt installment have not yet been announced.
