Fomer Foreign Minister and PPP stalwart, Hina Rabbani Khar belongs to the Khar dynasty that holds sway in Punjab’s district of Muzaffargarh.
She is the daughter of a prominent politician and land owner, Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar and niece of Ghulam Mustafa Khar, the former Governor and Chief Minister of Punjab.
Born on January 19, 1977 in Multan, Ms Khar was educated in some of the most prestigious institutions. She holds a Bachelors degree from the Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS) and a Masters Management Sciences from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (USA).
It was in 2002 when she first stepped in the fray of electoral politics after the Musharraf-era condition for electoral candidates to be graduates rendered her father ineligible to contest the 2002 general election.
She was elected to the National Assembly in 2002 from NA-177 Muzzaffargarh in Punjab on the ticket of the Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam. She was inducted into the cabinet of then prime minister Shaukat Aziz as Minister of State of Economic Affairs from 2004 to 2007.
Ms Khar served as State Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs between 2008 and 2011. In 2008, she joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) after she was denied a ticket for re-election by her previous party.
She became Pakistan’s youngest and first female to be appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs at the age of 34 during the previous PPP government at the Center.
During her stint as foreign minister from Feb 2011 until March 2013, she charmed the audience across the world and became a media icon for her insightful views and eloquence.
She also won the admiration for advocating peace and harmony in the Southeast Asian region.
