Hollywood mourns the death of director and actor Rob Reiner. He was found dead with his wife, Michele, at home on Sunday. The couple’s death has left the industry in shock.
The son of the writer and performer Carl Reiner, Reiner first rose to prominence playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark sitcom All in the Family. He later became one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, with films including Stand by Me, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally… and A Few Good Men cementing his reputation across generations.
The family of the deceased Norman Lear, creator of All in the Family, issued a statement mourning both Rob and Michele Reiner. In the statement, it read, “The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner”. “Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world”.
The statement added that the couple “spent every breath trying to make this country a better place” through art, activism, philanthropy and family, concluding, “The world is unmistakably darker tonight, and we are left bereft”.
Director Paul Feig wrote, “Rob is one of my heroes. I had the honour of calling him a friend.” Actor Paul Walter Hauser said, “Grieving the loss of my favourite director of all-time. A Few Good Men is THE reason I became an actor”.
Jon Cryer shared his reaction online, writing, “Horrible. I didn’t think today could get worse.” Josh Gad described the couple as “two of the most kind and caring souls you could ever imagine,” adding that Reiner “cared so much for those who had no voices”.
Virginia Madsen thanked Reiner “for giving us so much joy to hold on to,” while filmmaker Joe Russo wrote, “We lost one of the few good men”.
US politician Nancy Pelosi said, “Rob was creative, funny, and beloved. And in all of their endeavours, Michelle was his indispensable partner, intellectual resource, and a loving wife.”
