JHELUM: A man was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing his German citizen wife who was earlier found dead under mysterious circumstances, ARY News reported.

The incident occurred on Tuesday after Shahbaz Ali and his German national wife Dr. Uzma were at an event hosted at a local law college. Dr. Uzma was living in Germany since the last eighteen years and had acquired citizenship. She had arrived in the country with her husband and children two weeks ago.

Her husband Shahbaz took her to their ancestral hometown of Jhelum, where she was later found dead under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday. She was taken to a local private hospital and then a government hospital by her husband.

Police had taken husband and son in custody. Shahbaz had earlier claimed that his wife had died after falling from the stairs at the college.

The suspect’s son Amaar in his statement to Police said that his father along with a friend invited them to a local law college, where his father snatched a gun from the guard and shot his mother.

The suspect has reportedly confessed to the murder during initial interrogation, while the post-mortem report has also confirmed the cause of death by gunfire.

The German embassy has contacted the family of the deceased and assured all legal and diplomatic support including the protection of the children.

Family sources said that Shahbaz was unemployed and had a dispute with his wife over a joint bank account. The family members of Uzma had also alleged that she was killed by her husband.

Her sister Qamar-un-Nisa has complained that the Police are deliberately weakening the case against her brother-in-law, and placing the blame on their young son who cannot even speak Urdu.

She had visited her brother-in-law in custody who threatened them with dire consequences. She demanded that Shahbaz be given an exemplary punishment for killing her sister.
