According to PTI spokesperson, the couple divorced with mutual consent. PTI’s senior leader Naeemul Haq has issued a terse media statement confirming the news of couple’s divorce.

It is learnt that the couple had been braving some issues for some time, which led to their divorce. Sources in the PTI claimed that Imran wasn’t happy with Reham for her interference in party politics.

He appealed the media to understand the sensitivity of the issue and not spread any rumours.

On September 22, senior journalist Arif Nizami had claimed in a TV talk show that Imran Khan was regretting his decision to marry Reham and their marriage was “at the verge of collapse” and their relation had reached the ‘point of no return’.

The PTI chairman requested everyone in a series of tweets to allow him privacy, since this was a painful and sad time for him.

Imran also rubbished all speculations about financial settlements in another tweet and termed them as ‘shameful’.

Imran and Reham’s denial over marriage collapse rumours a month ago

He had also said that Imran had recently returned from London where he stayed with his ex-wife Jemima Khan and children.

Following his claim on a TV show about Imran’s marriage, Arif Nizami had seen several trolls going after him on Twitter with a hashtag “ArifNizamiSaySorry”.

The couple had entered a wedlock on January 8, 2015. Their Nikkah ceremony (marital contract) had taken place at Bani Gala.

Imran Khan is the father of two sons from his previous marriage to British socialite Jemima Goldsmith.

They divorced in 2004, allegedly over the difficulties Jemima faced in Pakistan, where she was hounded for her family’s Jewish ancestry, and his obsession with politics.

Born in 1952 in Lahore into a comfortable family with origins in the Pashtun northwest, he was educated at Aitchison College, the Eton of Pakistan, boarding school in England, and then Oxford University.

He became one of the world’s greatest ever all-rounders — a fearsome fast bowler and dangerous batsman — whose finest hour came at the 1992 World Cup, where at the age of 39 he led an inexperienced team to the title.

AFP adds: Loved by millions across the cricket-obsessed nation for winning Pakistan its only World Cup in 1992, Khan’s sporting prowess and rugged good looks also brought him international celebrity in a country lacking glamour.

He was considered his country’s most eligible man until he suddenly announced his plans to marry shortly after launching a movement to topple the government in August 2014, which he called off in December after a Taliban attack on a school that killed 150 people.

Reham Khan, host of a local TV talk show, was widely criticised after she appeared at public meetings of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) party, with opponents accusing her of seeking to boost her own profile through her husband’s fame.

She found particularly harsh reception in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, governed by PTI.

She also sparked controversy after it emerged that she had not actually attended a college where she claimed to be a student on her website.

There had been reports Imran Khan’s family was unhappy with his choice of bride.

As news of PTI chairman Imran Khan’s divorce started doing the rounds on social media, Pakistani Twitterati went into a frenzy. Tweets started pouring in, mostly shocked and aggrieved.
