Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has officially made his politics debut by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday.

According to NDTV, Gambhir will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket. He is likely to be fielded by the party in the upcoming polls from one of the seven seats in Delhi.

Gambhir joined BJP in the presence of Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad.

“I’m inspired by PM’s vision and work. I hope to do good work,” Gambhir said on the occasion.

The 37-year-old former cricket star joins the league of former Indian players affiliating with political parties like Mohammad Azharuddin, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammad Kaif, Praveen Kumar, Vinod Kambli, Kirti Azad and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

The Delhi-based batsman was retired from international cricket in 2018.

A day earlier, Indian media reported that veteran Bollywood actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Shatrughan Sinha may bid farewell to his party.

As per reports, Sinha is likely to join Congress and contest the upcoming Indian election from Patna Sahib – the seat he won on a BJP ticket in 2014.
