Is Darren Sammy going to embrace Islam?

KARACHI: West Indian cricketer Darren Sammy has become quite a familiar figure in Pakistan, especially after he defied all odds and apprehensions to play the Pakistan Super League final in Lahore, and his candid admiration for Pakistan stood him out among other foreign players.

After taking his team Peshawar Zalmi to title triumph in the PSL, Sammy continues to be in the news in Pakistan – for all the good reasons. Reports are going rounds in the media claiming that Sammy may convert to Islam and he got inspiration from the religion during his stay in Pakistan of late.

Zalmi owner Javed Afridi, through a video message circulating on the social media, asked his team’s fans to pray that Sammy converts to Islam.

Javed says he feels it is his big achievement for him to get Sammy to read about Islam.

“I pray that he accepts Islam as his religion,” said Javed in the video. “He has complete knowledge and the way he is reading about Islam, I think it’s a biggest achievement. For me, for my whole team, it is a big thing.”

From making astonishing statement to get his head shaved in case Zalmi wins the PSL title (and it did later on) to speaking Pashto, Sammy never ceased to surprise his fans during the PSL.

On the international front, Sammy has led West Indian side to two World T20 title victories and currently his side is the defending champion.
