LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday heard a petition against the Lahore Zoo for not keeping an elephant for last two years, ARY News reported.
According to details, a citizen named Mohammad Fawad Mughal filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, in which he maintained that the lone female elephant of the zoo, Suzi, had died two years ago.
The petitioner held the view that the Lahore zoo was frequented by people from far-flung areas, who came here to marvel at the rare animals.

He maintained that the zoo hadn’t acquired a new elephant in the last two years and that he wasn’t given a ‘satisfactory response’ on his numerous applications that he filed with the department.
The petitioner prayed the Government of Punjab be directed to procure an elephant at the earliest.
The judge, Mohammad Ameer Bhatti, directed the provincial government and the director of Lahore Zoo to file their responses within ten days as to why it had failed to acquire an elephant despite passage of two years to the last elephant’s death.
The last elephant of Lahore Zoo, Suzi, was imported in 1988 and was one of the most popular animals of the zoo. She spent nearly 25 years at the zoo till her death 2017.
Established in 1872, Lahore Zoo is one of Pakistan’s oldest and largest zoos. Spread over 25 acres in the heart of Lahore, it is visited by nearly 3 million people annually.
