ISLAMABAD: Daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday directly criticised the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s July 28 verdict in Panama papers case which led to her father’s ouster from premiership, ARY News reported.
In a series of tweets, Maryam Nawaz compared senior judges’ remarks with the apex court’s handling and verdict in Panama papers case and objected upon their conduct.
Analysts are of the view that the tweet which directly criticised the court’s judgement and the judge’s remarks in case against Imran Khan, is clear contempt of court.

The tweets done by Maryam Nawaz had screenshots regarding Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) remarks while hearing Hanif Abbasi’s petition which seeks the disqualification of Imran Khan and PTI secretary general Jahangir Khan Tareen over non-disclosure of assets, existence of offshore companies owned by Imran and Tareen as well as PTI being a foreign-aided party.
The CJP had asked Hanif Abbasi’s counsel Akram Sheikh to only give arguments regarding the petition, upon which Maryam Nawaz said that in Panama verdict, the petition was regarding Panama papers but he was disqualified on Iqama.
In another tweet, Maryam Nawaz criticised a judge’s remark in which he said that if 6.5 percent of the money is without trail, it is no crime. Maryam Nawaz asked if such a small amount is negligible then why the same court did not calculate what percentage an amount of 10,000 Dirham holds in Nawaz Sharif’s assets.
Back in July, a five-judge Supreme Court bench disqualified then PM Nawaz Sharif in a unanimous verdict in the Panamagate case, thus cutting short his third stint in power.
Soon after the SC judgement, the PM House issued a terse statement saying that Nawaz Sharif, despite having reservations on the SC’s verdict, has stepped down from his post as the premier.
Sharif served as prime minister twice in the 1990s but failed to complete his tenure. In his second term he was ousted in October 1999 coup leading to a decade of exile. He won a third term as prime minister in 2013 general election.
