Model Town incident: Commision rejects to prevent media coverage of investigation

When the commission’s investigation opened today, headed by tribunal judge Justice Baqir Najafi, Advocate Rasheed Gondal filed petition seeking to prevent media coverage of the commission’s proceedings stating that it will affect the investigation.

Justice Baqir responded that media is an independent body and nobody would be allowed to repress its freedom. He said the matter had come at the forefront because the media had operated as an independent institution adding that it is source of satisfaction that media and judiciary is independent in the country.

Amicus curiae Abdullah Malik told the court that aides are being harassed. He said they not only receiving threatening calls from Wazristan’s number but their cars have been towed by government agents.

An application was filed in the tribunal asking to gather telephonic records of all Minhaj-ul-Quran’s office bearers in order to have realities.

Tribunal replied every assistance from Minhaj-ul-Quran is welcomed and any member of Minhaj-ul-Quran can voluntarily record its statement to tribunal.

Advising wounded police officers of Model Town incident to record their statements to tribunal adjourned the hearing till July 18.
