Musharraf refutes rumours of being leader of MQM-P, PSP

DUBAI: Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf on Sunday denied reports as ludicrous that he was considering taking the leadership reigns of the Mutahidda Quami Movement (MQM-P) or the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP).
In a video statement, the former president said that he was being dragged unnecessarily in Karachi’s politics, and therefore it was necessary to issue a clarification.
Musharraf said is keeping a close watch on the politics in Pakistan particularly the changing scenario in Karachi, and is deeply concerned that his name is being wrongly used.
He said that it was ludicrous to think that he has no would lower himself and become the leader of either party and had no interest in them, neither that he being invited by them to take over the leadership reigns.
“I have no sympathy with the MQM, but with the Muhajir community, he said. However, Musharraf said that he was nation leaders and not does not want to confined to any particular ethnicity. “I want to be the leader of all ethnicities, not just Muhajirs.”
He said that the breakup of the alliance between MQM and PSP was inevitable as it was a ‘non-starter’ and ‘unnatural’. However, he said that it was necessary to bring all segments of society and ethnicities under one banner but with rather with a different name.
Therefore, he said that a new alliance should shun the name ‘Muhajir’ and break free from the shackles of the MQM as it is being a bad image to the Muhajir community. He said that he was not degrading himself and stoop down to being the leader of the MQM-P.
He said his new alliance ‘Pakistan Awami Ittehad’ had representatives from all provinces and all factions of the Pakistan Muslim League and even the forward blocs of the PML-N and PPP. The alliance had its first meeting in Lahore and will elect its president soon.
He said that alliance will also include those from rural areas of Sindh such as Pir Pagara, and in this way will be able to defeat the PPP and the PML-N in the next general elections.
