Ahead of her all-female Daisy Chain Fields festival, Olivia Rodrigo is dropping a unique track to encourage women’s empowerment.
On August 21, the 23-year-old pop sensation released the song “Serena Joy” on limited-edition CDs at Analog Records in Orange County. It will be made available digitally on August 24.
The hitmaker wrote the track using the Handmaid’s Tale character of the same name as inspiration—an activist for conservative beliefs who was ultimately persecuted by those same ideals. All proceeds from the song’s sales will go toward funding her August 29 women-led music festival.
In Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”, Serena Joy is a conservative, religious woman of high status. She used to be a prominent activist & public speaker who defended conservative ideas, only to have her own power stripped away once the system was established.

After the song went viral, fans flocked to social media to support Olivia Rodrigo’s advocacy, writing:
“Olivia releasing a political song about women’s rights right before her all-female festival… yeah, I’m stanning her for life.”
“WE’RE READY!”
“WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WTF WHAT OMG??????? BUT LIKE IS IT A BONUS TRACK, DELUXE, OR JUST AN INDEPENDENT SINGLE??? WTF.”
Others chimed in with, “And we will all be streaming!” and “The album is smashing and she’s still feeding us. Oh, Olivia!” Another excited fan added, “AYYY CANT WAIT.”
