On this day, 20 years ago Saeed Anwar hit magnificent 194 runs to help Pakistan beat arch-rivals India in their home ground in 1997.
Indian bowlers found themselves helpless against Saeed’s powerful hitting as every trick they tried turned out abortive . This remained the highest individual score in limited overs internationals (ODIs) for 12 years.
Saeed Anwar was a legendary batsman who gave good performance with consistency and broke many records. He is considered to have built up the best opening pair of Pakistan along Aamir Sohail.
This Karachi-born qualified computer system engineer played three World Cups. He was superb at playing great knocks with calm nerves and was well-acquainted with how to upset bowlers.

The left-handed batsman’s international cricket career spans from 1989 to 2003. He has played 55 Test matches, scoring 4,052 runs with eleven centuries at an average of 45.52.
In 247 ODIs, he made 8,824 runs at an average of 39.21. He made twenty centuries in ODIs, more than any other Pakistani batsmen in this format.
The tragedy of death of his daughter, Bismah, turned him religious and he started preaching Islam across Pakistan with the Tablighi Jamaat. Later, he bid adieu to the cricket world for good.
