Paramedics fulfill dying woman’s wish to see ocean for one last time

A Queensland ambulance crew melted million hearts with their extraordinary compassionate gesture when they fulfilled the wish of a patient in palliative care to go to the beach.
The heartfelt moment was immortalised in a picture taken by Danielle Kellan, a member of QAS team that took the woman to the beach.
The picture shows Queensland Advanced paramedic Graeme Cooper standing next to the woman looking at Fraser Island from Hervey Bay.
Hervey Bay officer-in-charge, Helen Donaldson, said: “A crew were transporting a patient to the palliative care unit of the local hospital and the patient expressed that she just wished she could be at the beach again.
“Above and beyond, the crew took a small diversion to the awesome beach at Hervey Bay to give the patient this opportunity – tears were shed and the patient felt very happy.
“Sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills – sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference!”
The crew revealed that this was the second time they brought the woman to the Bay.
The patient was first shown the ocean from that same spot two weeks before, when the paramedics were driving her from the palliative care unit back home, where her husband was waiting for her.
