Petition seeking contempt proceedings against Sharif filed in LHC

LAHORE: A petition seeking initiation of contempt of the court proceedings against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif over his rant against the judiciary was filed on Friday in the Lahore High Court (LHC), ARY News reported.

Advocate Azhar Siddiqui in his petition submitted in the high court pleaded to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Sharif for criticizing the Supreme Court judges.

A day before, the disqualified prime minister while addressing a crowd at Sohawa during his power show on the Grand Trunk (GT) Road took aim at the judges who handed guilty verdict against him. He said, “I become prime minister through votes while five honorable judges sent him packing.”

The petitioner submitted that Sharif criticized and held the judges of the Supreme Court in contempt for disqualifying him. His speech is an attack on the top court and breach of the Constitution, he argued.

Siddiqui complained that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) shied away from taking any action against news channels for airing his contemptuous remarks.

He pleaded the court to initiate contempt of the court proceedings against the ousted prime minister under Article 204 of the Constitution and restrain the news channels from airing his speech targeting the judiciary.
