PlayStation 6 base model could lack a disc drive and extra storage

The next generation of PlayStation consoles might not attract those who prefer building physical game collections. A hardware leaker known as KeplerL2 shared on NeoGAF (via WCCF Tech) that the unconfirmed PlayStation 6 may not include a disc drive.
In response to a question, KeplerL2 also mentioned the PS6’s base model might have only 1TB of internal SSD storage, similar to most PS5 models.
Typically, storage specs improve over time, but Sony may be making only a slight upgrade or no change at all this time. This is likely due to the AI-driven global RAM shortage, which recently caused speculation that the PS6 might miss its late 2027 launch.
While Sony might normally include a 2TB drive in each base PS5, current circumstances could prevent that. The absence of a disc drive is expected to upset many users.
Although the PS5 has offered a no-disc-drive version since 2020, Sony also sells a separate disc drive attachment. Sony could probably do the same for the PS6, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Although most video game sales now occur in digital marketplaces rather than physical retail stores, many people still prefer to own their games.
This preference can stem from concerns about digital storefronts potentially shutting down or simply the desire to build a nice collection of physical media. Plus, there are often great discounts available on used games.
