PM holds consultations to legally challenge JIT report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday chaired a consultative meeting to hammer out a strategy to tackle political pressure and contest the findings of the Joint Investigation Team which have triggered a political storm in the country, ARY News reported. 

During the consultative meetings, it was decided the JIT report will be challenged in the Supreme Court and a full-fledged legal battle will be fought to defend the Sharif family.

The meeting was attended by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning, and Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal and Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf. Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif also attended the meeting.

Legal experts briefed the prime minister over the the matter. The meeting deliberated over JIT findings which can be challenged in the Supreme Court, and overview of the supposed contradictions in the report.

This is the second consultative meeting in two days as PM Sharif faces increasing pressure to resign over the damning JIT report. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar was not part of the latest meeting since he had met the premier separately earlier in the day.

Former Ehtesaab Bureau chairman Saif-ur-Rehman has also flown in from Qatar to attend the consultative meeting.

A day earlier, the PM had also chaired a high-level meeting at PM House in which most of the party leaders and cabinet members had asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif not to resign and contest the matter legally and politically.
