PM Imran vows to end political interference in education sector

ISLAMABAD: Expressing concerns over the reports of political influence in education department, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said he would not tolerate any political interference in the higher education sector.       

In the wake of Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Dr Tariq Banuri’s statement pertaining to political interference in the higher education sector, PM Imran telephoned him and asked to identify the persons and all such practices.

According to a statement released from the HEC, Dr Tariq Banuri assured the prime minister of his full support to rid the education sector of political interference.

The chairman told the prime minister that HEC would play a positive role in increasing access to higher education, improve its quality and ensure its relevance to the socio-economic needs of the county, reads the statement.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan on September 24, had  assured civil servants that there would be no political interference in their work; however, their prime focus should be service to people.

“Huge foreign investment can come to Pakistan if governance in the country is improved,” he had said while addressing government employees in Lahore. He urged civil servants to play their due role to this effect.
