ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday described the agreement between Israel and Hamas as a historic opportunity to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, a ceasefire and hostage deal that could open the way to ending a bloody two-year-old war that has upended the Middle East.
In a statement posted on X, the Prime Minister welcomed the development, calling it “a historic opportunity to end the genocide in Gaza and secure lasting peace in the Middle East.”
He praised U.S. President Trump for his leadership, stating that “his unwavering commitment to dialogue and negotiations reflects a genuine desire for global peace.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz also acknowledged the “resolute and wise” efforts of the leaders of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkiye, commending their relentless pursuit of a diplomatic resolution.
“Most of all, we must pay tribute to the Palestinian people—who have endured immense suffering, the kind that must never be repeated,” he said.
Expressing deep concern over recent provocations at Masjid Al-Aqsa, the Prime Minister strongly condemned the actions, urging the international community to hold illegal settlers and occupying forces accountable.

He emphasized that such provocations threaten to undermine the progress made through the agreement and the efforts led by Trump to reduce tensions in the region.
“We will continue to work with our partners, allies, and the leadership of brotherly nations to ensure peace, security, and dignity for the Palestinian people—in line with their aspirations and relevant UN resolutions,” the Prime Minister added.
