RAWALPINDI: PML-N leader Pervez Rasheed on Friday said that the party would consider the name of PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan for the post of president if he visits Adiala prison and apologises to Nawaz Sharif for his remarks.
The former information minister in PML-N government, was talking to media outside Adiala jail where Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam are currently serving the jail terms awarded by an accountability court in Avenfield corruption reference.
Replying a whether the PML-N would support Ahsan in the presidential elections, Rasheed said that the party holding consultations with other opposition parties and wants a joint opposition candidate for the election.
Differences between two major opposition parties widened following the PPP in a unilateral decision named Ahsan as its candidate for the office of the president in the presidential election scheduled to be held on September 04.
Former ruling party PML-N, soon after Aitzaz Ahsan’s nomination had opposed the PPP decision adding that he could not be considered a joint opposition candidate as the party was not consulted before the decision.
The tensions between the two opposition parties enraged after the PPP refused to vote for the PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif in the Aug 17 election for the post of prime minister because of his controversial statements against the PPP leadership in the past.
The opposition parties are expected to meet after Eid ul Azha to consult and decide a candidate for the presidential election.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), has announced Dr Arif Alvi a party MNA from Karachi as its candidate.
