PTI requests ECP for financial accounts scrutiny of PPP, PML-N

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday submitted a request to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to scrutinize the financial records of other political parties in the manner it examined the details of PTI’s accounts.

Speaking to press outside the ECP building, PTI spokesperson Naeem-ul-Haque said that a request has been submitted to the ECP to examine financial records of two political parties; Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The move has been taken in the backdrop of the scrutiny of the party’s financial records by the ECP to dispel a growing impression that the country’s top electoral body is only targeting the PTI, Haque asserted.

He said that the ECP’s credibility is foremost and it should not be tarnished ahead of upcoming General Elections in 2018.

The request to probe the financial records of two parties has been made after the party’s auditors have discovered glaring irregularities in their accounts, Haque claimed.

Reiterating previous claims, Haque said that they has submitted the accounts’ details from 2010 to 2017 to the ECP.

Last week, the ECP wrapped up the contempt proceedings against PTI Chairman Imran Khan after the Khan submitted an unconditional apology to the election body over his contemptuous remarks.

The five-member ECP bench, headed by chief election commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan, was hearing a petition, filed by a former PTI leader Akbar S. Babar earlier this year, which alleged that PTI chief Imran Khan has committed contempt of court in his comments on the party funds, claiming that he had not apologized to the ECP over his comments instead his counsel did so in his personal capacity.

It merits to mention here that the ECP had issued the contempt notice to Khan on January 24 over his “scandalous remarks” about the commission.
