LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi proudly mentioned that his provincial house tops in legislation than all other elected houses in the country.
Talking to a delegation of Pildat, he said the Punjab Assembly had so far enacted 16 laws since its formation eight months ago, which gives it a lead in legislative work among all other provincial house as well as the parliament.
Nevertheless, the Punjab Assembly could not fulfill its legal duty of completing its 40 standing committees by holding elections to their chairpersons slots. Until now, only chairpersons for 14 panels have been elected while polling for rest of the bodies is yet to be held.
It may be recalled that Punjab lawmakers came under fire after the assembly unanimously passed a bill on March 13, increasing the salary, allowances, perks and privileges to each legislator.
In his Twitter message, Prime Minister Imran Khan said, he was ‘extremely disappointed by decision of Punjab Assembly’ regarding raise in salaries and privileges of the Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs), other minister and especially the chief minister.
Continuing his sharp criticism against the provincial lawmakers, he termed the development as ‘ untenable’ move by legislators amid the deteriorated economic situation ‘ when we do not have resources to provide basic amenities to all our people’.
