QUETTA: Police have arrested a member of the Balochistan Assembly for allegedly killing a traffic sergeant in a hit-and-run driving incident, ARY News reported on Saturday.
Traffic sergeant Attaullah Dasti, 42, was killed earlier this week when he was hit by a vehicle reportedly being driven by lawmaker Majeed Khan Achakzai, who is also the chairman of the provincial assembly’s public accounts committee.
Achakzai was arrested from his residence on Friday night and shifted to the Civil Line police station. He was presented in court without handcuffs before a judicial magistrate where he was given a five days remand into police custody.
Achakzai also had some sharp words against media blaming them for the footage of the incident. He said that the footage of the Quetta attacks was not found but they have unearthed the footage of the incident.
Achakzai’s vehicle rammed the sergeant near the GPO Chowk on Tuesday leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The car was reportedly speedy while the driver escaped after the horrific incident.
Earlier, Quetta police claimed to have arrested the driver of the MPA and seized the vehicle, but later registered a First Information Report of the incident against unknown persons despite knowing that Achakzai was himself driving the vehicle.
According to media reports, SSP Nazeer Kurd said, “Majeed Achakzai was driving the vehicle himself and we are investigating the incident.”
Majeed Achakzai is also a close relative of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai. He was elected from the PB-13 constituency in Qilla Abdullah.
