SC seeks federal govt's response on petition calling for judicial reforms

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the federal government to submit comments on a petition seeking reforms in the country’s judicial system to ensure swift administration of justice.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, who headed the three-judge bench, gave this direction while hearing the petition that called for the use of judicial activism to institutionally overhaul the country’s delay-ridden judicial system.

The bench directed the federal government to come up with a response in the case on next hearing and adjourned the hearing for three weeks.

The Chief Justice observed that the judiciary was in dire need of basic judicial reforms, which were only possible with legislation to this effect.

He said it was not the duty of courts to carry out legislation. Those who are supposed to enact laws should undertake such a task, courts would not intervene, he assured.

CJP Nisar, however, said there still were things which courts could do on their own to improve the judicial system.
