SC grants six-week extension to conclude Nawaz's graft cases

ISLAMABAD: For a fourth time, the Supreme Court granted deadline extension to the Accountability court for wrapping up corruption cases against the Sharif family within six weeks.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar was heading a two-member bench hearing the request of accountability judge Muhammad Bashir to extend the hearing deadline of the corruption references.
The bench observed that the verdict in one of the references (Avenfield reference) has already been announced while approving additional time of six weeks for the hearing of Flagship Investment and Al-Azizia Steel Mill references.
The top judge remarked,“We are confident that Khawaja Haris (Nawaz’s lawyer) will complete his proceedings in the given time period as we have preferred to give six-week duration despite accountability court’s plea for four weeks.”
The accountability court pleaded the apex court for a four-week extension in its request.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Supreme Court has previously given the accountability court three deadline extensions for deciding the fate of references filed by National Accountability Bureau; the last deadline has ended on July 10 (today.)
