Security threats: Prosecutor in Baldia factory case quits

The special prosecutor Shazia Hanjra cited life threats as reason for stepping down from the case.

She alleged that the case was purposefully distorted.  Hanjra claimed that investigating authorities had not been cooperating with her. She added that the investigating Officer had given a no objection certificate to the factory owners’ bail application.

Earlier, sources told that a suspicious person had also tried to sneak into Hanjra’s residence. Following that, four police commanders were deployed outside her residence.

In a startling revelation in a Baldia factory fire case on February 6, a joint investigation report by law enforcement agency declared that the factory blaze was an act of ‘foul play’, instead of an incident, after its owner refused to pay an extortion amount. Blaze in Ali Enterprises – a garment factory in Baldia Town – burnt at least 258 people alive on September 11, 2012.

Rangers had submitted their report in the Sindh High Court.

The report said it was an organized crime. A top leader of a political party had sought Rs 200 million from the Baldia factory owner.
