Shah Rukh Khan claimed he had signed for the film but could not work on it as he got injured while filming ‘Devdas‘.

“I could not do it because I was injured at that time,” he said. “I had undergone a spinal operation. I was not sure when I’ll be able to join.”

The actor recalled that he accepted Rajkumar Hirani’s offer to work in Munna Bhai MBBS but he got injured when the latter was making his first film.

” Raju dialled me from London and asked, ‘When will you do it?’ With due respect, Raju was not a big director. He was making a small film. Waiting for a star was difficult for him,” he revealed.

The ‘Chak De India‘ star said no one except for Sanjay Dutt could have played the lead role perfectly.

Rajkumar Hirani had confirmed that he had approached Shah Rukh Khan to play Munna in the film but Sanjay Dutt’s physique played an important role in landing the role.

“We also approached Shah Rukh Khan. Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) seemed just right for the part. This is because he has the physique where he can look like a ‘bhai’. Also, with his dropping eyes and charming smile, he seems like someone whose heart is in the right place. Now, I look back and can say that he was the right choice,” he said.

Munna Bhai MBBS‘ told the hilarious story of goon Murali Prasad Sharma who joins a medical college to fulfil his father’s dream of becoming a doctor.
