Two target killer teams involved in attack on Mufti Taqi Usmani: police

KARACHI: Police on Sunday said two teams of target killers were involved in attack on Mufti Taqi Usmani of Darul Uloom Karachi, ARY News reported.

“One team followed his vehicle from Korangi Industrial Area, while the other team of target killers chased his car from Dalmia area,” the investigation team of police said.

It said after opening firing on Mufti Taqi Usmani’s car, the target killers fled towards Safoora Chowrangi and vanished.

The probe team has decided to do geofencing of Dalmia Road and Rashid Minhas road to locate whereabouts of the attackers.

The police and other law-enforcement agencies have reportedly carried out raids on late Friday night in different areas, including Quaidabad, Hussain Hazara Goth, Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi, Orangi Town, North Karachi, PIB Colony, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Dalmia, and arrested more than a dozen suspects.

Meanwhile, a first information report has been lodged at Aziz Bhatti Police Station against unidentified persons, under the charges of murder, attempted murder and anti-terrorism.

On March22, Mufti Taqi Usmani survived a gun attack, while another religious figure Maulana Amir Shahab targeted was shot and injured at Nipa Chowrangi of Karachi.

At least six unknown assailants on three motorbikes, opened fire at the vehicle on the Nipa flyover, police had reported.

The attackers fled the scene after firing leaving Amir Shahab and his security guard severely wounded. The security guard later succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, Amir Sheikh, told media that the assailants attacked the second vehicle which was following Mufti Usmani’s car near Nipa roundabout.
