Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn to be recast in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’

There’s no going back to the original king this time. Viggo Mortensen will not return as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with the filmmakers now actively looking for a new actor to step into one of Middle-earth’s most iconic roles.
Director Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his role as Gollum, has confirmed that the production is already underway in finding a replacement.
The decision effectively closes the door on Viggo Mortensen’s return, something fans had quietly hoped for despite the years since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Now, the new film — set somewhere between The Hobbit film series and the original trilogy — requires a younger Aragorn. That naturally rules out Viggo Mortensen returning in any meaningful way.
There’s already industry chatter about how difficult it will be to find someone who can carry even a fraction of what Viggo Mortensen brought to the role. Internally, the tone seems cautious.

Beyond Mortensen’s absence, the project is shaping into a familiar but carefully guarded return to Middle-earth. Peter Jackson is back in a producing role alongside longtime collaborators, while Serkis is pushing the story into slightly darker territory—part physical pursuit, part psychological unraveling centered around Gollum.
Casting so far remains tight-lipped. Kate Winslet has joined the film in an undisclosed role, adding weight to the lineup. Meanwhile, names like Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen continue to circulate in speculation, though nothing concrete has been confirmed.
Even within the original cast, there’s a sense of protectiveness around these characters. Not surprising. Middle-earth isn’t just another franchise—it’s something audiences tend to hold onto pretty tightly.
And that brings it back to Viggo Mortensen. His Aragorn set a benchmark that still looms over the series. Whether the new actor embraces that legacy or tries to move away from it entirely, comparisons are inevitable. Viggo Mortensen’s shadow isn’t going anywhere.
The Hunt for Gollum, backed by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2027. Plenty of time to find a new Aragorn. But replacing Viggo Mortensen? That’s the real story here.
