Currently the Mayor of Karachi since August 24, 2016 Waseem Akhtar is a renowned politician and a senior member of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He is an active member of National Assembly. Born in Karachi on 25th November 1955 Akhtar also runs a business of Real estate.
He graduated with a degree in Telecommunication Engineering and later joined MQM at the initial establishment of the party in 1988.
Akhtar in 1993 got elected as a member of Provincial Assembly of Sindh following in 1997 where he got elected on the same position. In 1997 Akhtar became the Minister of housing and town planning.
In 2003 Akhtar became the advisor to Chief Minister for local government development and in 2004 he became the Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh for Home department.
Akhtar Got elected as (MNA) Member National Assembly of Pakistan in 2008 till 2013 elections.
He did not hold any official governmental position till 2016 when he was elected as the Mayor of Karachi.
Waseem had been arrested based on a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report of Dr Asim Hussain Chairman of the Dr. Ziauddin Group of Hospitals.
Akhtar was arrested shortly after his nomination papers were accepted by Election Commission of Pakistan and got nominated as Mayor of Karachi. An FIR was registered against him in the District of Malir and Anti-Terror Court ordered his arrest which by many political critics saw as a part of political crackdown against MQM who previously had blamed the Law enforcement agencies for transgressing their authorities and extra judicially killing many MQM workers including Aftab Ahmed, ex coordinator of Farooq Sattar.
Charges against Waseem Akhtar include listening speeches of Altaf Hussain and clapping on his speeches. He is also accused of recommending people to Dr. Asim for medical treatment.

Local media ran reports of Waseem Akhtar confessing murdering people on 12 May 2007, but his lawyers presented signed letter from his jail declaring the reports to be false fabrication. Waseem Akhtar later himself appeared in front of the media and rejects fake confession reports.
Waseem Akhtar had been released from detention on November 16, 2016 after getting bail on all 39 cases.
