Hollywood legend Diane Keaton has been confirmed to have passed away from pneumonia at the age of 79.
The Oscar-winning star, known for her roles in “Annie Hall”, “The Godfather” and “Something’s Gotta Give”, died on October 11, with her family sharing the news with People magazine.
In a statement, the Keaton family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support received in the days following her passing. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary message of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane”, the statement stated.
Sources close to the actress revealed that her illness came as a shock to those around her. “She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her”, an unnamed friend said, adding that it was unexpected for someone known for her strength and spirit. In her final months, Keaton chose to keep her circle small and private, only allowing her closest family members around her.
Despite her declining health, another source noted that Keaton maintained her sense of humor and continued to cherish her friendships. “She was funny right up until the end and had a way of making even ordinary moments feel special”.
In the wake of her passing, many friends and colleagues have paid tribute to Keaton, including Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bette Midler, Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn, and Belinda Carlisle. Keanu Reeves described her as a “generous artist and a very special, unique person”.
Keaton celebrated for her mastery in both comedy and drama, won an Oscar for her performance in “Annie Hall (1977)” and was nominated three additional times for her roles in “Reds (1981)”, “Marvin’s Room (1996)”, “Something’s Gotta Give (2003)”. She was saved by her adoptive daughter, Dexter and son Duke.
