The actor once revealed that it was actually the action film which changed her outlook and inspired her towards that journey.

Speaking to a foreign publication once, Jolie mentioned she was devastated to see the situation in war-torn Cambodia while touring for the film. “One of the first camps I went to had 400,000 people. It was a sea of human misery,” she had said.

“In Sierra Leone, I saw tens of thousands with their arms and legs cut off [by rebels], orphaned children. I felt completely overwhelmed.”

The actor also mentioned that she would keep crying from the guilt for everything she had, after the experience.

“I cried constantly. I felt guilty for everything that I had. Then I realized I wasn’t doing these people any favours by crying. I kept getting angry at the injustices until I couldn’t think straight. I took a deep breath and focused on how I could help. I discovered that I was useful as a person. When I met suffering people, it put my life into perspective. It slammed me into a bigger picture of the world.”

That was the beginning of Jolie’s journey as a dedicated humanitarian.

The movie came out in 2001 and in the same year, Jolie became the Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR and continued her activism for human rights over the next decade, before being promoted to special envoy of the agency, a role she continued until December 2022.
