Aamir Khan’s sports drama film Dangal was well received by the fans and the flick went on to become the country’s highest grossing film.

The plot of the story circles around a father teaches his daughters to wrestle who go on to win medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. As inspiring as the story is, there are several factual errors in the super hit film which are worth-noticing.

1. Birth of his daughters:

We can see that Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) is disheartened on the birth of his daughters and forgets the dream of winning a gold medal for the country. However, Mahavir Singh Phogat’s Biography ‘Akhada’ stated that his wife Daya Kaur was unhappy over giving birth to the two girls.

2. The win/loss history of Geeta:

Geeta (Fatima Sana Sheikh) had won a gold medal in the 55 kg freestyle wrestling during Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in 2009. However, the film showed that athlete didn’t won a sports event before 2010 Commonwealth Games and faced defeats in every international fixture earlier.

 

 

3. Long hair vs short hair:

Geeta Phogat kept long hair during her matches for the Commonwealth Games in 2010 but the film showed that the wrestler had short hair.

4. The melodramatic finish:

Geeta won the gold medal in a dominant fashion with a score of 1-0, 7-0 in just two rounds. However, the film’s last scene shows the athlete’s struggle in beating the Australian opponent and won by 3-0, 4-6 and 6-5 points in the bout.

 

5. The coach’s attitude:

In Dangal, Geeta’s coach Pyare Lal Sondhi in the National Sports Academy was portrayed a villain and he denied the old training given to the woman athlete by her father and keeps egging her to accept his skills for wrestling. In real life, the attitude of the coach was completely different. Sondhi claimed that Aamir exaggerated real life events to make his film a super-hit amongst audience.
