Younis Khan announces retirement from One Day Internationals

This means that today’s One Day International between Pakistan and England will be Khan’s last ever. Younis Khan issued a statement that he had reached the decision to retire after much thought.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also confirmed Younis’ decision to retire. His career spanned an impressive fifteen years, during which he played several impressive knocks to save Pakistan’s oft crumbling and fragile batting order. He has so far played 264 ODIs for Pakistan and scored a total of 7,240 runs in 254 innings, averaging at 31.34.

Most recently, Younis Khan broke Javed Miandad’s 22 year record and became Pakistan’s highest run scorer in Test matches. Younis is a veteran of 104 Test matches and has scored a total number of 9,116 runs till date, averaging at 53.94.

Another feather in Younis Khan’s cap was when he captained Pakistan to their sole Twenty-20 World Cup victory in 2009 and subsequently retired from Twenty-20 cricket. Younis Khan was instrumental in Pakistan’s recent Test series victory over England in Abu Dhabi, when he scored impressively throughout the series and made a couple of centuries. His stellar batting and innings along with Misbah-ul-Haq’s contributions helped Pakistan beat England 2-0.

Younis Khan batted with Pakistani greats Muhammad Yousaf and Inzamam-ul-Haq before they retired from International cricket. Following their retirement, the task of leading the Pakistani batting order fell on his and Misbah-ul-Haq’s shoulders.
