QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly on Saturday elected Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) President Jam Kamal Khan as new chief minister of the province.
The election for the coveted slot was held in a session at the assembly building in Quetta.
Newly elected Speaker of the provincial legislature Mir Abdul Qaddus Bizenjo presided over the session during which the new chief minister was elected by the method of division of the house.
Jam Kamal received 39 votes while his rival JUI-F leader Mir Yunas Aziz Zehri managed to secure 20 votes.
The new chief minister would take the oath of his office at the Governor House in Quetta at 5:00 pm on Sunday.
Third Balochistan CM from Jam Family
Jam Kamal, the new Chief Minister of Balochistan is third man from his family who has elected to the top executive position of the province.
Before him, his father Jam Mohammad Yousaf Aliani held the office of the chief minister of Balochistan from March 2002 to December 2007.
Jam Ghulam Qadir Khan Aliani, the grandfather of Jam Kamal, held the high political office of Balchistan twice. His first term as chief minister of the province started on 27 April 1973 and ended on 31 December 1974.
The second term of Jam Ghulam Qadir began on April 16, 1985, which came to an abrupt end when Gen. Zia sent the central government of prime minister Muhammad Khan Junejo to packing on May 29, 1988, with dissolution of the National Assembly and all four provincial assemblies.
