Chawla shared that she was supposed to do Bhansali’s long-ideated romance epic ‘Bajirao Mastani’ as well but couldn’t due to an accident during her screen test.
“Woh actually bohot saal pehle ki baat hai, over the years change ho jata hai, (It happened years ago and decisions get changed over the years),” she revealed to Kannan in reference to Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh starrer.
“My screen test happened soon after Tere Naam. I had done a photoshoot with Sir [Bhansali] in his style. My saree caught fire because ghee and oil spilt on my saree. I was holding the diyas (clay lamps) in his style and it fell, and I was wearing a silk saree. I remember that happened,” she detailed the mishap.
After being delayed multiple times due to casting changes, Bhansali’s passion project was finalized with the real-life couple, Padukone and Singh as leads, while Priyanka Chopra played Kashibai.
The cinematic masterpiece about Maratha Peshwa Bajirao and his second wife Mastani, was released in Dember 2015. The film was a huge Box Office success and fetched several accolades including seven National Film Awards.
