Name of caretaker PM to be finalized within a month: report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government and the Opposition are expected to finalize name of the caretaker prime minister within 30 days, reports said.

The report published in the Arab News cited Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah as saying that he had spoken to various Opposition leaders to suggest their nominees for the caretaker PM.

Those whom Shah spoke to included Shah Mehmood Qureshi of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of Pakistan Muslim League-Q and Jamaat-i-Islami emir Sirajul Haq.

The Opposition leader will also hold a meeting with the incumbent prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in this regard.

The role of caretaker set-up always remains important in holding polls in a transparent manner.

Alongside this major responsibility, the caretaker PM will ensure implementation of measures for CPEC, terrorism, Karachi. The elections are scheduled to be held on July 15 this year.

According to the government, it has developed new software for the Election

Commission of Pakistan and NADRA to ensure a “free, fair, impartial, transparent and peaceful general election.” The Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid elaborated that youth reaching the age of 18 will automatically be registered as voters when they apply for a CNIC from NADRA.

On March 23, 2013, the then government had named Justice (R) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as the interim prime minister of Pakistan and after the victory of PML-N in the polls, Nawaz Sharif was elected as chief executive of Pakistan.

Here’s the list of caretaker prime ministers who served Pakistan in erstwhile tenures.

Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi from August 1990 to September 1990.

Mir Balakh Sher Mazari from April 1993 to May 1993.

Moin Ahmad Qureshi from July 1993 to October 1993.

Malik Meraj Khalid from November 1996 to February 1997.

Muhammad Mian Somoro from November 2007 to March 2008.

Justice (R) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso from March 2013 to June 2013.
