KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah on Thurday directed the Inspector General Sindh A.D. Khawaja to take steps to reduce street crime across the city which has reportedly seen a gradual rise in recent weeks.
The chief minister while chairing a meeting of the provincial cabinet ver viewed the security situation in Karachi and raised concerns over the increase in criminal activities in various districts.
He asked the IG to direct Station House Officer (SHOs) to be more vigilant in their areas to curb street crimes as it is the police’s responsibility to control street crime in the city.
The CM stressed that mobile phone shops should have data of the the customers who sell to them, and action should be taken against criminals selling spare parts from stolen motorcycles.
He said that the Sindh government will let the sacrifices of the Rangers, police and others go in vain and hand over victory to the terrorists. He said that government of Sindh sent a list of 94 seminaries to the Ministry of Interior on the orders of the apex committee, but the issue was marred in controversy and placed on the back burner.
IG Sindh briefed the cabinet about the security situation and dismissed rumours about the increase in street crime in Karachi, but rather confined to certain districts.
He said that there was a thirty percent decline in motorcycle and a 34 percent decline in motor vehicles theft. He claimed that there had been no kidnapping-for-ransom case in the current year, whereas in 2016 eleven kidnappers were killed while 36 were arrested.
He said that community-based police system has been launched in various parts of Karachi including Bahadurabad and Ferozabad. He said that efforts were being made to arrest the accomplices of Asim alias Capri and Ishaq alias Bobby who are alleged involved in the killing of 98 people.
CM Murad also instructed to remove car parking from pavements, and ordered a crackdown on illegal car parking which is one of the main cause of traffic jams in the city. He also ordered action on markets selling stolen items.
He also called for price control on essential items and action against profiteering and hoarding, and formed a six member committee under Manzoor Wassan to draft a bill and finalise list of essential items.
The cabinet was informed that there are 1,063,315 arms licenses issued in the province, of which 473,347 arms are registered, and 198,426 have been verified.
CM Murad also formed a committee under Burhan Chandio, Murtaza Wahab and Sikander Mandhro for a detailed overview under the Arms act.
