Construction of dams inevitable to ensure supply of drinking water: CJP

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday termed the construction of new dams inevitable to ensure supply of drinking water to people and generation of electricity.

“Pakistanis are capable of constructing dams with their own resources,” he said while talking to a delegation of an NGO which called on him in Lahore.

The chief justice said that the future generations and history would not forgive us if loans and debts were not paid back.

He said that the nation had great expectations from overseas Pakistanis who had always helped their motherland in the time of need.

On the occasion, the delegation donated 100 million rupees for the construction of new dams.

Earlier, during conversation with journalists at the Supreme Court Lahore Registry, Mian Saqib Nisar appreciated the request by the prime minister to overseas Pakistanis seeking their assistance in overcoming water crisis.

The fund formed to collect donations for construction of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams is about to reach Rs 2 billion mark, latest statistics show.

The account was opened following the Supreme Court orders to collect donations from people across Pakistan and those living abroad.

All the commercial and micro-finance banks, and field offices of SBP Banking Services Corporation have opened the Fund account to receive donations in cash, and through cheques, pay orders and demand drafts at all their branches across the country.
