Court permission sought to record Saad Rafique’s statement in Model Town carnage

LAHORE: A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) inquiring into the Model Town carnage has moved a plea in the accountability court to grant permission to record former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique’s statement in the tragedy.

Khawaja Saad currently is on judicial remand in Paragon Housing scam till April 4.

Investigation Officer (IO) Iqbal Hussain Shah in his plea sought court’s permission to record the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader statement, as he is nominated in the case.

Contacted the Anti-Terrorism court to seek permission in this regard, but asked to contact relevant [accountability court], the plea state.

The IO has pleaded the court to grant permission to record Khawaja Saad Rafique’s statement in the camp jail.

Accountability Court Islamabad on Thursday allowed the Punjab police to question former prime minister Nawaz Sharif about the Model Town case, who is serving seven-year prison term in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Accountability Judge Arshad Malik had granted a plea moved by DSP Muhammad Iqbal seeking permission to question the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader in the case.

On June 17, 2014, at least 14 people were killed and 100 others injured when the police opened fire to disperse protesting Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers during an anti-encroachment operation outside the residence of PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri in Model Town Lahore.
