Court awards six months prison term to man for 2nd marriage sans wife’s consent

LAHORE: A local court here on Wednesday awarded six-month jail term to a man for getting married a second time without consent of his first wife- a violation of the marriage laws.

Judicial Magistrate Syed Ali Naqvi at local court heard a petition filed by Ayesha Khalil against her husband Shehzad Saqib.

The petitioner adopted a stance that her spouse married a woman without her permission, which is sheer violation of fundamental rights guaranteed to her by the constitution.

Remarrying a woman without a written consent is illegal in light of the Supreme Court’s rulings in similar cases; hence the court should take action against the husband, the petitioner pleaded.

The defendant’s lawyer contended that there are no restrictions on getting married for a second time in Islam since a man has been granted permission to marry up to four women.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, the judge awarded a six-month jail term to the husband while directing him to deposit Rs 200,000 fine.
