The Sindh government on Saturday constituted a 10-member committee which would draft its recommendations for turning the psychiatry institute located in Hyderabad’s Latifabad locality into an autonomous body.

The Vice-Chancellor of LUMHS would head the committee whereas the nine other members belong to different educational, health and administrative departments.
The mental health institute, the largest of its kind in Pakistan, currently operates as Department of Psychiatry of LUMHS.
The institute was established circa 1865 during the British Raj, making it one of the earliest such institutes in the subcontinent and present-day Pakistan.
Originally designed with a capacity to house 500 patients, the asylum, locally known as Giddu, has seen its capacity drastically reduced over the years due to mismanagement and lack of funds.
